Right now, an estimated 14,000 Moon Bears are held in captivity in China and Vietnam, milked twice daily for their bile so it can be used as a health tonic for humans. They are drugged and restrained in cages barely big enough to hold them, starved and dehydrated. They have their abdomens jabbed with unsterilised 4 inch needles until their gall bladders are punctured to release their bile. Others are milked through open infected abdominal wounds or rusty catheters and are pumped full of antibiotics just to keep them alive... sometimes for as long as 30 years.
When their bodies are exhausted and cannot produce any more bile because they're riddled with tumours and disease, these majestic animals are not even given the dignity of euthanasia. They are left to suffer and die a slow and painful death. Bear farming is legal in China. The farms are owned and run by major local pharmaceutical companies and wealthy businessmen. As of 2010 the Chinese government has allowed Animals Asia Foundation to rescue 277 bears. But there are still 10,00 bears suffering on farms throught China today.
The worst thing about this horrible practice is that it is completely unnecessary. There are over 54 different herbal alternatives and man made synthetics that are just as effective. No one is going to die from a lack of the healing ingredient in bear bile.
Animal Asia also works to put an end to humans eating domestic dogs and cats in many Asian countries. As some of you know I have 3 cats who have become more than just my family. My love for all animals and my absolute disgust at the cruelty towards them has led me to become an Ambassador for Animals Asia. In watching their video and reading the horror stories I found myself bawling in pity for these beautiful creatures. It just breaks my heart.
Animals Asia is an independent foundation that receives no financial assistance from any Government body.
